One of my personnal target was to keep large color area, and stylized shapes. I think this story and aesthetics could be developed for a short 3D movie, or an illustrated book. Maybe I will continue working on it on my "weekly painting" ( story / storyboarding / character model sheet /etc... ) . Having my own pre-production short dossier ready for eventual future could be a nice personal project. I hope you like the result High resolution 2385x3200px is available [on deviantArt here](http://deevad.deviantart.com/art/Electron-donor-418940728 "on deviantArt here" ) (download button on right column) **Update 2016-07-25:** This illustration is now [licensed under CC-By 4.0.](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ "licensed under CC-By 4.0" )

Mosquitoes hunter

**Products and prints available [here on eshop](https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/108502207?ref=studio-promote). ** I wanted in this illustration to paint a good book cover about faeries. I collected design ideas from my sketchbook and targeted to paint it for my portfolio. I feel far from the result I had in mind this time, but I got good surprise at the same time. Sometimes I have to accept the illustration has 'her' own life in the creative process. I tried to keep the painting brush strokes visible ( not to smoothed ) and keep a high level of details, but I'm still doing test to find the good harmony between: * Time spent on illustration * Dynamism of the painting, presence of the 'human hand' * Level of details and finishing About the theme - here on my holidays in Poland- the garden is surrounded by mosquitoes and they really 'bloody' love my wife and me. I thought I would have my revenge with painting a good mosquitoes hunter. If only I could have fairies like this, the garden would be here a real paradise. Full of blood females mosquitoes are surely full of protein. _software : Gimp and details in Mypaint_ **2022 Update:** Updated resolution, color grading and painted-over the design because I couldn't like the piece anymore. Previous version is still [visible here](https://www.davidrevoy.com/data/images/blog/2010/08/13/Mosquitoes-hunter_by_David-Revoy.jpg).

Marasme des Oréades

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 10 comments
'Marasme des Oréades' is a little elf under the rain with a particular enlighten mushroom. His name came from the mushroom named in french ' Marasme des Oréades ' wich is the 'Scotch Bonnet' or the 'fairy ring mushroom' in English ( lat. [Marasmius oreades , source : Wikipedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marasmius_oreades "Marasmius oreades , source : Wikipedia" ) ). Now it's the season to go in forest for mushroom after rainy days and I really want to spend hours to find them... This illustration was done mainly in GIMP from a scanned drawing on paper ( pencil on a A4 bristol paper ) , the original drawing was given to a friend. You can notice in this piece my new custom brushes.

In my opinion , the CG choice Award is the biggest, more valuable and more difficult prize to obtain in digital painting or illustration. It's a kind of achievement to receive it after submitting regularly my work on it since 2005 , and I'm really honoured to now being displayed on the Choice Gallery at CGTalk. And I have another reason to feel honoured ; I'm the first awarded with** using only Open-source on Linux**. This openness and recognition from the professional world of digital painting is really valuable for my work with Free/Libre Open Sources Softwares on Linux. **Thousand thanks CGsociety !** Detailed making of published on CGtalk : Complete WIP (in french) is[ here on the forum of www.3dvf.com](http://www.3dvf.com/forum/3dvf/CONCOURS-2010-Alice/wonderland-deevad-revoy-sujet_86_1.htm "forum 3Dvf, Alice in Wonderland by David Revoy" ) **Update 2022:** Switched license from CC-By-Nc-Sa to CC-By 4.0 international.

Useless to say it was long painfull, and I worked a lot to redo/repaint/correct a lot of part of the picture again and again... For the moment I estimate I can't go more far. I also tested another workflow for managing a A4 300dpi full detailed picture with Gimp and Mypaint under my Linux system. Now I realize I became more skilled with the couple of FLOSS software Mypaint and Gimp than I was with Photoshop and Painter... but don't get it wrong : it's surely related to my own skill of digital painting and learning rather than about the competences of the softwares. This feeling to have my tools is good cause it make me sure to continue to work on Linux after the end of the open movie ["Sintel"](http://durian.blender.org/ "the third open movie" ) . By the way about "Sintel" , the pre-première is in Amsterdam this week-end. I'm exited to watch it !

Fractal mermaid

**Update 2022**: For Mermay, I posted (finally) the full-resolution here, fixed minor issues and switched license from CC-By-Nc-Sa to CC-By. Click on the picture to access the full resolution. Enjoy! --- *original post:* With this artwork of a mermaid starts a project : **publishing artworks on this blog** alongside my personal career in illustration and concept-art. This approach was inspired by the many webcomics I frequent, and I thank a lot their authors. No WIP (Work in Progress) or unfinished sketch, nothing but the final result of the experiment as I thought it could be published. I will try to update the gallery of my portfolio to date, such as galleries and forums which I participate. I'm not sure to comment each time. I will keep posting too about digital painting tutorial and resources. This artwork was created with Gimp-painter and Mypaint. I wish myself good luck and perseverance in this adventure, and it lasts as long as possible! I hope you will enjoy ;)
