The hi-res webcomic option

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 5 comments
New feature for Pepper&Carrot website : **the High Resolution button ( HD ) displaying Pepper&Carrot artworks to 2400p**! ### Demo: You can test the HD button**on all episodes**, but for a first time ; I recommend episode 7 . Fastest to load ( 5 pages ).** The HD button is at the end of the language buttons:** ### How it works : The resolution update the page to **2481 x 3503px, PNG files** ( around 13MB to 20MB per page, it can take 1 or 3 minute after pressing the button to load ). The page will fill your active screen. This feature needs a browser with the support of javascript. It's compatible with hi-resolution and [retina display](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_Display "retina display" ). **Next step?** Probably the next technical step will be a Pepper&Carrot API. This simple [API](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_programming_interface "API" ) will be more about the specification of folder and file naming + a JSON files updated with a database of links to work with all the pages. It should bring many options for connected applications ( eg. it would ease the creation of a computer desktop widget displaying last cover + linking all episodes ). **Credit:** This feature was coded with the precious help of Sölve Svartskogen, also translator of the Polish version and contributor on the fonts. This project was possible after big autumn cleaning and refactoring with new naming convention.

Pepper&carrot derivation: ACBF format (comic reader) by Robo Pastierovic

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 1 comment
Robo Pastierovic converted Pepper&Carrot to **ACBF format**, which is a format he created **for comic books** some years ago and he is still working on it and related tools. It is free and supports : * lots of different **metadata** (title, authors, genres, published date ...) * comic panels definition (application can **zoom in** on particular panel and view the comic panel by panel) * **table of contents** * **text layers** for translations (text is drawn on top of underlying image, user can switch between different languages) To view it, people need to install ACBF Viewer application. It is free/open source and can be downloaded for Linux, Windows and Android. ** ** **Download ACBF Viewer :**[https://launchpad.net/acbf/+download](https://launchpad.net/acbf/+download) For Pepper&Carrot, Robo Pastierovic created comic panels definition and 2 text layers English one and a Slovak translation. If people want to contribute, they may create text layers for different other languages. They just need to understand the XML structure of the ACBF file which is inside the CBZ archive. It should be pretty easy as the text-bubbles polygons are already defined and viewer application calculates the size and placement of the text automatically. More info can be found on ACBF Wiki: [http://acbf.wikia.com/wiki/Advanced_Comic_Book_Format_Wiki](http://acbf.wikia.com/wiki/Advanced_Comic_Book_Format_Wiki) **Project page : ![](data/images/derivations/2015-10-13_abcfviewer-screenshot_2.jpg) **

Answer to: How your webcomic can be Free/Libre and Open-Source?

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - no comments
**How a webcomic can be open-source?**.. This is a **frequent asked question**. In fact, I was receiving this type of comment almost ten time at any new episode's release in the first episodes. I'm writing today this note to reply in depht to this question because it's a serious topic and I hate when I read comments like _"... yet another guy playing with the open-source trend without knowing what he does"_... ### A new way to 'build' comic pages I had the idea to design a collaborative open translation system for Pepper&Carrot at episode 6. It works like that: ### Sources files \- **Krita KRA** files store artworks with multilayers, filter layers, groups, vector layers. \- **Inkscape SVG** files store lightweight and scalable translations speechbubbles with advanced text editing tool \- **Markdown MD** files to store wiki, documentation and text All sources are [available here](https://www.peppercarrot.com/static6/sources "available here" ) . ### Building the source : To install all the sources, build and manage them, I developed [a set of scripts](https://framagit.org/peppercarrot "a set of scripts" ). The main one is a **renderfarm scripts**. This tool does the DJ between KRA graphics files and Inkscape SVG translation layers to build from the sources all **low-resolution JPG** compressed images for the web, and **high-resolution PNG** lossless for the print to share on this website. They also manage to backup my work, generate Work-In-Progress (wip) images. Why is this necessary? Because a single page can have an illimited amount of translation, and this translation needs to get an output as a low-resolution jpg, a high resolution for printing and more. If I change a single pixel in a page; all the related translations needs to update. If a translation changes, it will rebuild against the artworks. ### 15GB of happy sources The project has nowaday a bit over **11 episodes**, **15 Git repositories**, **30 collaborators**, **100 Krita artworks**, **500 patrons**, **4000 SVG translations files, 5000 JPG low-res built and 5000 PNG hi-res built!** and many commits per week (new translations) to manage. When all sources are installed, without backups, the project size is around 15GB, with all sources built it can grow up to 25GB. With revision system and backup ; 50GB. That's why I have now 10GB of built picture [are available on this website](https://www.peppercarrot.com/static6/sources "are available on this website" ) and I predict it will double in the next years. Edit 2018: 40GB now, 40 languages, 25 episodes, 50 translators!

Pepper and Carrot logo

WRITTEN_BY David REVOY - - 14 comments
Here is the re-design of the 'logo' of Pepper&Carrot. The first version of this logo was done just after publishing the first episode, around April 2014. On recent episodes, the design of Pepper and Carrot evolved and the first version started to look too different to keep representative. I hope you'll like them! I'll maintain this week all the places online where the old logo appears. **Download :** High resolution on transparent background available here [ ](http://www.peppercarrot.com/extras/?dir=logos "http://www.peppercarrot.com/extras/?dir=logos" ) **Previous logo ( April 2014 ) :** ![](data/images/artworks/2014-04-10_peppercarrot-logo.jpg)

Video timelapse «Witches of Chaosah»

[youtube]DPoX7j2d-Ec[/youtube] Before doing this artwork, I made almost [hundred sketches and doodles](https://www.patreon.com/posts/weekly-bonus-22-3337641 "hundred sketches and doodles" ). It was hard to find the design of the three 'new' witches of the Chaosah school. I need them for the future episode 11. All the sketches were black and white. It was difficult to see if their design will match the style of Pepper with color and rendering. A good pretext to paint a 'proof-of-concept' artwork, rendered as I would render a panel. I had the idea to shot work-in-progress of the traditional process, then screen-record the painting. I hope you like the result and the video as well.
