Krita 4.0 Brushes

Published on

The result of a survey made by the Krita foundation over social network reported you were a large majority using my brushkit 8.2. A big thank you about that! So, I was sponsored by the Krita foundation in March to work on the default brush kit for Krita 4.0. My mission was to merge my brushkit 8.2, my Charcoal Pencils and wet brushes into a collection of new presets made with feedback of the community and merge also brushes submitted by Ramon Miranda, Wolthera, Pablo Cazorla, Rad, Scott Petrovic, Razvan and other. I triaged them, painted new thumbnails, took care about sorting them, renaming them, optimizing them and polishing the settings. You can read the Git commit here if you want full details. I am now really happy using them, and happy to share them too! Documentation:
You can read the fully illustrated documentation here:

Download:
Just download Krita 4.0, they are part of it by default. Migration:
I couldn't port all my brushkit to Krita and keeping exactly the same. I merged the one duplicate, and decorated other one to be consistent with the way brushes were sorted. Here is a graph of the evolution and merging. I hope it helps if your work-flow was dependent of a specific setting in my 8.2 brushkit.

Awesome, looking forward to try them.

This is great news! Thank you!

Any reason why Krita has brushes grouped differently than the categorization in documentation?

link David Revoy Author,

Hi Tomek,
Thanks!
Oh, you probably speak about the "tag" ; because the brush are sorted visually in "all" category in the same order than in the documentation. The subgroup (families) in the documentation can be split with the first letter ( you can filter on the bottom of the windows by a) , b), c) ... z) ).
I don't think creating a tag for each family could be a good idea. It's better to use tags for a group of brush with a workflow in mind. In the tag I proposed by default, you can find one oriented Painterly style ; another one more digital, and a last one specialized into black and white inking. All this tags require an eraser, something to sketch, something to move pixels, etc...

link Tomek

Thank you. This was very informative (filtering, workflow tags) and makes a lot of sense!
By the way, I really like these small illustrations next to the brush thumbnails. They somehow inspire me to learn painting and drawing more... :)

thank you very much davidrevoy your brushes have served me a lot, I congratulate you for your great work, a giant hug, you can see my work in

Merci pour l'info David,

En revanche j'ai téléchargé et je ne trouve pas mes anciens brushes (notamment ceux qui étaient encore dans la 3.33... sauriez-vous ou je peux les trouver ?).

D'avancer merci !

link David Revoy Author,

Bonsoir,
Les brosses 3.3 sont distribué comme bundle desactivé. Il suffit d'aller dans le gestionnaire de resources et d'activer les brosses anciennes.
Bonne soirée

Super ! merci !

I'm new with Krita and digital illustration and finding this page as being an oasis, please, keep up that good work. I'm a traditional amateaur painter and learning how to use the wacom and krita is quite a challenge. Thanks a lot for all the material.

link David Revoy Author,

Thanks for the feedback Norberto!
Good luck in your path learning Krita!

As always super awesome work. Can hardly wait to get home and try them.
Should I remove your previous resource pack before upgradeing to Krita 4.0? (currently have 8.2 installed)

I like that you always add an example use case for every brush because often when I see other peoples brushes I have no Idea what they can be usefull for. Wish there would be something like that for blending modes too. Because for 95% of the available blending modes, I know how they work, because that's in the wikis, but not what they could be used for.

Keep up the good work!

link David Revoy Author,

Hey! Thanks!

No need to remove the previous pack for technical reason : naming is totally differents (including the brushtip) ; they shouldn't interfere.
But you can remove it for taste reason: the brushes are almost all ported ( exept the one I merged, as explained on the graphic in this article ).

About the blending modes; you are right. I made this video but only explained 5 : https://youtu.be/AybFWViT-3Q
That's also hard to cover them all : because a lot of blending mode are just random algorithm to compare the pixel A (top layer) with the pixel B (bottom layer). This algorythm comes from papers about photo, graphics, standards, compositing. I'm not sure I get a usage for 70% of them. But for sure I could try to think about it. I place that in a corner of my brain.
;-)

link Takiro

Yeah, I'v seen that video basically the day it came out (It was actually the thing that pointed me in your direction in the first place). I wanted to improve my digital workflow and since blending modes were pretty much black magic to me back then, I figured It could probably enhance my workflow a lot (and it did). The only blending modes I knew at that time were Multiply and Screen (and I only had a wild guess when to really use them). I learned a lot from your video. Now, my favorite blending modes are Overlay, Color and also Value. I also like the Greater blending mode that came a few versions ago, especially with pixel brushes. After reading your tutorial https://www.davidrevoy.com/categorie17/tutorials-beginner I basically reversed my workflow from doing color first to doing a grayscale first. Although I have to admit that I often still do a colored speedpaint first and then convert it to grayscale (set the layer's blending mode to value) to get a feel what my desired target colors look like in gray. Anyhow, my shading is much more consistent and coherent now, thanks to you. :3

Hey, sorry to bother you. I know this is probably not the best place but may I ask what OS you currently use? I'm on the newest Manjaro with XFCE but I just noticed that the tilt direction recognition doesn't seem to work with my wacom (anymore). tilt elevation seems to work fine. It's is inconvenient since some of the new default brushes, I really like, use tilt. It works fine on windows so I guess it's not a krita problem but an issue with the OS and the linux wacom dirvers.

link Takiro

Never mind. I tracked down the issue and it's probably related to this https://github.com/linuxwacom/xf86-input-wacom/issues/11
Downgraded my xf86-input-wacom package to 0.35.0-1 and now it's working again.

link David Revoy Author,

I switched this week to Kubuntu 17.10 + the backport PPA to get latest Plasma5.12LTS D.E.
I had a issue with my UbuntuGnome17.10 ; nvidia driver upgrade and then I had slowdown. But it took me a lot of hack to find this culprit. I couldn't just downgrade because my investigation on this issue broke a lot of the desktop. Kwin , the compositor of Plasma5 does a good job so far.

link Takiro

Thanks for the answer. I used Kubuntu once too but had issues with Krita, Qt and also the Plasma5 performace. That's pretty much why I switched to Manjaro, also because the packages in the Ubuntu repos where always too old (especially krita and the PPA was gone for a while).
Perhaps I should give Kubuntu another chance since nvidia driver upgrades can be quite a pain on manjaro too. Also there is no properly working GUI way to configure the wacom tablet on Manjaro and doing it via terminal is annoying.

link David Revoy Author,

Yes, distro working or not is something really dependent of your hardware.
That's why a distro will work amazingly well for a group and not for another.
The hard part is the thing are moving constantly. So a thing that was working yesterday will not work tomorrow.
I spent 2 years on Manjaro/ Arch/Antergos. Moving around this three. I promised myself to stick to 6 month release distro after that, even if it's sometime worst. But at least, it let me document my own workaround and reuse them during a couple of month and not worry with update (especially for my own scripts to automatize task on peppercarrot ). Using GNU/Linux is definitely not a easy thing :)

link Fabi

Um, hello sir! I have a problem, a pretty dumb one, to be honest. Let's say that i erased all the brush presets that come for default in krita 4.0 in a try to also use them in krita 3.3.3, i have tried and searched everywhere for a way to recover them, but i've failed miserably, i've even have installed and uninstalled the appimage of krita and they still don't appear, can you tell me what to do? I'm really sorry to bother you, seriously.

link David Revoy Author,

Hi Fabi ; I hope I can help.
Go in the settings ; manage resources and then "open resources folder" ; it should open your filemanager on the pref stored by Krita. Close Krita ; Remove in the folder all the file ending with "blacklist". reopen Krita ; does they reappears?

link Fabi

Like..remove is delete or i just move the file to another place? Sorry if i ask this but English isn't my first language so yeah...

link David Revoy Author,

Yep, you can move them to another temporary directory if you prefer to be cautious

link Fabi

I already did it, i couldn't restore all brushes but i downloaded your v8.2 bundle...the brushes that were restored were the watercolor ones, i really missed that ones but the ones i really need are the smudge brushes...those were beautiful, but thanks anyways :3

link David Revoy Author,

It sounds like your install has issues ; don't hesitate to report bug on Krita bug tracker ; it might be relative to the system.

link David Prommer

I love to read your articles and browse through your website... it is such a good work! Thank you! :)

they recognize your work as superb? :D or u work with Krita team? anyway congrats

link mrvalgard

Finally tilted pencil - most natural way to transgress form analog sketch :)

link mrvalgard

can u upload pack for 4.0 separatly? i messup something in brush engine and can't back to default settings :/ will be nice to have option to do this without reinstall Krita

link mrvalgard

haha if i want to change default size from 10px to smaller amount in engine editor and save it even as new one, it automatically change shape form circle to square - everytime for all pencils, what is going on :D

link mrvalgard

nvm (it's just by nature of pixelart :P, works fine, can't delete comment)

link David Revoy Author,

Yes, I contribute to Krita as a beta tester since 2011. The software sort of got adapted to my need at that time.
My brush wasn't recognise as superb by the Krita team; but a poll to Krita user revealed my brushkit was installed in a big percent of the case and in use for doing primary things. That's why I got the job of doing the default Krita brushes with Krita team for Krita 4.0 (and up).
Thank you!

link David Revoy Author,

In brush editor, there is a little pad-lock very dangerous ; maybe you have the one of "brush tip" activated.

link David Revoy Author,

No I can't; but there is an option to recover default setting.
Go to Settings > Manager ressources > Open ressource folder.
(in background close Krita)
Now empty the content of this folder ( or copy it to a temporary folder you created for safety) and then restart Krita.

Great job, David!
many thanks - wielkie dzieki!

I haven't use Krita brush yet. How can i download and install it? Can't work your download link.

Thanks in advanced.

Hey, firstly thank you.... but the file not found, :( why?
sorry my english, i'm brazilian guy

link David Revoy Author,

Hi, there is no file. It's now part of Krita installer.

Yes, Krita team recently changed the documentation website; and broke almost all links on the process... I'll update!

Ok, I don't know what happened with this update, but all I see is a bunch of shitty brushes that I will never use, and all the good brushes taken out. Where the fuck are my old brushes!

I've been using Krita 4.0 for a while but I still like 3.3 better is there any way I can transfer 4.0's brushes into 3.2?

link Salina

Or if I could transfer 2 brushes over to 4.0 it would be great too because I've gotten attached to those 2. XD sorry is this is a stupid question.

link David Revoy Author,

Hi!
It is not stupid.
From 3.x to 4.x : You can transfer, but it is not necessary because brushes of Krita 3 are also in Krita 4. You just need to activate them in the bunlde ressource manager.
From 4.x to 3.x : It is a bit more problematic this way: the brushes of Krita 4 have features non existing in Krita 3, I'm not sure Krita 3 can read them correctly.

link Salina

Okay thank you so much! I just really like both of the brushes also I love your brushes they are so useful! But if you don't mind me asking how do you activate them? Thank you once again!

link Salina

Never mind! I found it after snooping around a little but, Thank you very much for your help and I love your brushes especially the stamps! Also I really love how you respond to each and every person it's very helpful and I'm sure others love it too! :)

link Washington Gomes

Hi David,

My favorite brushes disappeared after the upgrade and I was desperate until I saw this answer. Thank you so much for everything.

link Mitch

Hi David,
I love your work. Thank you for all your contributions to the community! I have two questions.

1) I'm curious why the basic_mix_soft brush didn't make it as one of the key brushes in Krita 4. I'd like to recommend reconsidering adding it into the brush set for Krita 4 (even though I know you can get it from the 3.0 bundle as mentioned above).

I not a beginner to digital art, but I'm more of an engineer who loves to learn and attempting to create art. So from that perspective I think I can see things from a beginners viewpoint. I think that the basic_mix_soft brush is one of, if not the, best brush for digital art beginners. The reason is that it can lay down color and has the very best ability to smoothly blend. It is definitely the easiest to control detail shading for beginners. I'm guessing that it's my lack of skill with the other brushes that makes the basic_mix_soft brush so valuable.

2) How do you and other Krita artists deal with the fact that, most of the brushes, with opacity or flow control, have hard edge artifacts when trying to shade or blend?

This is kind of the second part of my appreciation for the basic_mix_soft brush. When I try to shade with any other brush in Krita, even the Airbrush soft, it's almost impossible for me to avoid hard edge artifacts, when attempting to create opacity gradients (ie shading). The airbrush is better if I use multiple strokes, but this is a very common issue for me with many of the opacity brushes. Do all the artists just accept it and either like it or switch over to a blending brush later?

Thanks again for all you work on the brushes and your posts and casts.

link David Revoy Author,

Hi Mitch! Long time no see!
Thank you for the feedback.

1) As you can imagine the situation was complex. For Krita 4 a big project to refactor all brushes was done involving many artists. A couple of month before the release, the final pack was looking as a big compromise between more than 5 artists and no one had the time budget to redo all the icons and polish all the brush for making them predictable (eg. react consistently to brush size slider, opacity or blending modes). A poll returned a large part of the community used my Brushkit. So I was in charge of merging my brushes and cleaning the work done on Krita 4.0 brushes. The result in it is the best I could do with all this constrain and I'm still proud of it.
True, I understand a lot of brush from the previous kit were loved, and that's why I understood and I was in favor of getting the brushkit of 3.0 series (a lot of brush of 3.0 series are based also on my previous brush kit, as you know too).
Now, we have a little situation on the resources management: it is not possible right now to add or remove a brush to the bundle with Krita 4.0. That was an unexpected bug we discussed at the Krita sprint in spring: if we update the Krita4.0bundle; it will affect all the presets done by the users on top of this bundle. And this bundle contains all: brush tips, gradients, etc... Bundling all to get this 4.0 and 3.0 aside was a mistake on the maintainance point of view as it freeze all my possibility to tweak things. That's where a refactor of all the resources is happening right now and since month. Something with possiblity to downgrade/update a brush or a resource precisely, and get a dialog after an upgrade to ask user what to do : (use the krita default updated? use the local changed version?). Well, I'm waiting this resources refactoring + a couple of month of bug fix (because something tells me it will rain bugs after this refactor) to maintain the brush kit.

2) You'll see on my artworks that I try to avoid digital smooth gradient. I'm looking for the visible stroke, the proof a human put a move at this place. So, all in all, I like to build up with hard edges; it is certainly a bias for my perception of the brush engines; I rarely expected my brushes to make perfect smoothy surfaces. If I need to do subtle adjustement, I use multiple strokes at low opacity ( often managed by lightweight pressure of the stylus).

I'll have a look again at basic_mix_soft ; I probably missed something (also, It might need maintenance because mix brush engine is evolving and I don't think this one will react as it was in 3.0 ). As I told in (1) I'm still frozen with the update or the maintainance. But I can still do mini brush bundles that 'patch' the Krita 4.0 one as I did with my mini duo. Let me know if you have other brushes in mind.

link Mitch

Thank you for your response David. That explains a lot. As a software developer in my real life :) I definitely understand that adding new functionality, while also supporting previous capabilities can be a big challenge. Good luck to everyone on the refactor.

If you, or anyone is interested in an example of why I like the basic_mix_soft brush for smooth shading I made a quick little video to show it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI1O5bJmKx0&feature=youtu.be (not asking for feedback, just sharing info)

None of that is to take away from the fantastic job all of you involved in the brush presets did. It's especially wonderful for painterly effects. I think the iconography is also very well done.

Thanks again for the answers and effort in Krita 4 :)

link Michael Stolz

If I install the new brush set, will the old brushes be deleted? Or are the new brushes simply added?

link David Revoy Author,

You should be able to install as many bundle as you want side by side.
If you worry about data loss; do a backup of your resources Settings > Manage Resources > Open Resource Folder (and copy all file here and paste them in a folder where you backup things). In case things go wrong; you can always subsitute the wrong files with your backup and restart krita. Your brushes will be safe.

link Kasia

Hey, David, any ideas how to achieve this effect in Krita WITHOUT a lot of work? https://youtu.be/VnZEpic2UzU?t=547

Love your brushes :3

link David Revoy Author,

Hi Kasia, this type of brush are really near to impossible to emulate: something near could be a poorly rotated by drawing angle rectangle with a texture and sumdging reacting to pressure of the stylus. It would have poor control on digital due to the stylus rotation/direction (always a noisy signal, rarely accurate).

The default brush g)_Dry_Textured_Crease is probably the nearest brush to this type of effect. You can try to change the brush tip for a flat shape and see how it behaves.
Good luck!

link Kasia

Thank you for the reply.

I remember that in my fav gimp-painter you could make brushes "fade". I should look for sth like that in Krita, I guess.

link David Revoy Author,

I remember, "fade" was easy to use. In Krita, the system is bit more complex but offers more possibilities: you'll have to look for example on the categorie "Opacity" in brush editor ; and setup a "Time" or "Distance" curve that would represent how fast the brush become totally transparent. I think a classic fading is more based on distance. It gives the feeling of painting depletion on the tool.

link Kasia

There's is indeed a "fading" option in "opacity" category, but it - for some reason - works backwards. I can't find a way to reverse it.

link David Revoy Author,

You can change the curve direction in the graph to invert the value and go from 1 to 0 instead of 0 to 1 ; ( the default is a bottom-left to top-right segment ↗ change it to a top-left to bottom-right segment ↘)

link Kasia

already tried it :)

doesn't work... But maybe that sth with my PC I guess... No idea....

link David Revoy Author,

It works here: https://www.peppercarrot.com/extras/temp/2019-01-24_screenshot_134444_net.jpg

Have you unchecked the "Pressure" checkbox sensor on top? (to keep only fading) + lowering the length slider?

link Kasia

oh, I just realize I cannot uncheck it till I check "fade" first - THANK YOU ^__________^

link David Revoy Author,

That's right :) a limitation of the user interface: a modifier (as Opacity/Size/etc) needs at least one sensor (pressure/rotation/fade/etc...).
I'm happy you found it ! also, I'm sure you now have more knowledge to customize your brushes.
Have fun painting!

link David Revoy Author,

Hey, you can try this:
Download the original Krita 4 bundle from repository:

Then import it as a regular bundle.

does this pack work on krita 5 versions?

link David Revoy Author,

Yes, you'll be able to import the brushes, and you'll have them working. But probably a bit different than when I created them (some options on the brush engine were adjusted).
