Current workspace setup

A photo of my desk with three monitors; one on the desk is a pen display tablet (a Xppen Artist Pro 24) with customised shortcut written in white using nail polish. The tablet has a keyboard using a CinTweak keyboard holder. The keyboard is the classic flat from Dell. I have also a little bluetooth gamepad with key customised (by 8bitdo). On the foreground, a Blahaj shark plushies is wearing headphones. On the canvas, a study I made two weeks ago and on other monitors Mastodon in multi column 'deck' mode. Same, two weeks ago when I took this shot. The last monitor has Dolphin the file explorer of KDE Plasma Fedora, IRC, Clementine to listen musique. A terminal windows is around, I was updating the monitor calibration with argyllcms using command line interface

@kate On this setup, I type with the two forearms on the XpPenArtistPro24 display. It's 'ok' because it's not a super hot display tablet; but not 100% ideal. Still, I managed recently to make big morning of writing or code for the website in this position. When I have to do more keyboard intensive task for the full day; I just detach the keyboard, and push the display under the top one (and close it). Not ideal again, but so far, it works.

@kate
Wouldn't your tablet have the function to turn into a keyboard to type?

link David Revoy Author, - Reply
davidrevoy

@NeadReport No, it's not a tablet with touch support, only stylus. ๐Ÿ™‚ And maybe it's a good thing because I'm not really liking the touch keyboards in general: I'm slow with them, miss click a lot on keys. I still feel them to be a good workaround on small pad/tablet or phone; but I wouldn't edit an article with a keyboard like that or code a new page for my website with that.

@kate

kate@federatedfandom.net

@NeadReport yeah, same essentially. Also I've never met an on screen keyboard layout that can handle heavy markdown usage, much less coding.

@ElDeadKennedy @kaia Yes, you are right. It's a "8bitdo zero 2" 8bitdo.com/zero2/ gamepad. It has multiple mode (keyboard, switch, xbox, generic gamepad). Bluetooth on Linux catch the keyboard mode, and the generic gamepad.
I could grab the event on Linux with evtest, while in keyboard mode. So, I remapped the keys with this method davidrevoy.com/article989/how- , it's a good little pad to get on my other hand while drawing, especially when I'm taking weird position ๐Ÿ˜…

@kaia @ElDeadKennedy Yes, good little device. I'm happy about it. The battery is good enough to paint during 3 or 4 days, and it charges in two or three hour with a micro usb cable. It goes 'sleep' after three minute i think, but start button reconnect it almost immediately. So, it is useful.

How do you like those Sennheiser cans? Model?

link David Revoy Author, - Reply

@NeadReport It's the Sennheiser HD 599 , I took it in July because I had to change my very old one (even if I DIY a lot, but it was 10 years old and started to bug hard ๐Ÿ˜†). This one was praised in the reviews. I disliked it a lot at first opening: I was probably too used to listen to my music with my previous headphones. Bass/Treble changed and I wasn't used to it. Another con: when listening loudly, the room around can hear your music a bit. With time, I adapted to it but, yep, a bit meh.

@breadbin Oh yes, especially compared to 20 years ago when flat panel were still super expensive. I remember my first Cintiq 12wx, with 1280x800px for 12 inch, super dark. Then my bulky super expensive 21UX. This large 24 inch has quad HD resolution (2560x1440px) and is not that thick. It makes me wonder how will look my desk in 20 years from now ๐Ÿ™‚

Well, actually, I believe we will, for arm support if nothing else. And a stylus is better than trying to finger paint with virtual tools, as is a real keyboard for typing. But a lot of the other stuff will probably be replaced by unobtrusive AR gear.

@kvaks Hi! Wayland is far to be ready for my workflow, color calibration might be soon for next 6 month or 1 year (in progress?) but many features are still missing. Wayland can't even calibrate the cursor under the pen tip (to avoid parralax) on this tablet, so not possible for me to make art under Wayland right now. ๐Ÿ˜”

โ€œcalibrate the cursor under the pen tip (to avoid parralax)โ€

I didnโ€™t realize artists did this, that only helps as long as youโ€™re using your tablet from one angle right? If you were to adjust the angle of your tablet youโ€™d need to recalibrate this?

link David Revoy Author, - Reply
davidrevoy

@ademan Yes, sort of. It solve the parralax for a single position, so if the position changes too much, it's good to recalibrate.

@raccoon Hey, this one is the XPPen 24 Artist Pro, with a modified overlay sheet from Photodon, it works with a partial but good enough support on Linux/X11 and with Krita appimage. Check my blog, 'hardware' button on the top, it will list my review and the update I wrote about it. I'll also test a new tablet next month, a 16 inch from XPpen.

@davidou Hey, it's a 8bitdo.com/zero/ gamepad; this one has a 'keyboard mode' where the pad returns random letters. I kept this mode and customised it with this method davidrevoy.com/article989/how- , so now it's a wireless shortcut remote while I draw. It's ok, a bit tiny for my big hands, and it also loose battery after 3 full days of painting. But it charge quickly, and pressing start it connect to bluetooth quickly too. So, it is still convenient.
