Episode 39: "The Tavern" is finally out!

Published on

After spending the last few months quietly working on a longer Pepper&Carrot webcomic chapter alongside my weekly "MiniFantasyTheater" comic strips, I'm happy to announce Episode 39: "The Tavern" is finally out!

You can read the episode right now:
https://www.peppercarrot.com/en/webcomic/ep39_The-Tavern.html

This is a standalone episode I made for Pepper and her master Cayenne, a little road‑trip stop where they halt in a village. The theme is a lesson about courage, something I think many of us have faced.

This episode is also an experiment in making a comic about sound. I know: "comics are a silent medium!" but that only made me more curious to try the challenge. You’ll see attempts to convey voice volume, songs, and lots of small visual nods to sound. I hope some of those moments surprise you or make you smile.

As usual, the episode is totally free and open‑source. Full source files (Krita .kra and Inkscape .svg) are available in the episode footer. It was created 100% with Free/Libre software on GNU/Linux (Debian KDE 12). Big thanks to the proofreaders and translators who helped polish and share this one in other languages: English, Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文, Norsk (nynorsk), and toki pona are ready!

Most importantly: this chapter wouldn’t exist without my community of supporters. A special thank you to the 1,106 supporters: on Patreon, Tipeee, Liberapay, and via direct transfers. Your support bought me the time and space to make this possible!

I really hope you’ll enjoy this cosy, slightly experimental chapter!

en plus je crois que c'est pile dans le thème du genre d'histoires qu'elle a besoin d'entendre, en ce moment de pré-préadolescence. Donc remerci.

Thank you. :)

It seems the salesperson of the basket and brooms shop changed between panels. I say this only to Echo I really enjoyed this and watched out for details.

And then everyone in the tavern clapped. 😆

Aww, I love the animal people. They're so cute! And that low angle when Pepper stole up her courage to confront them.

It all turned out to be a misunderstanding that was fixed when she politely asserted herself. :ablobcatnod:

OH! I just realized there's a setting where you can see the sketches and everything underneath. That's so cool! I love looking at the underworks of a piece of art.

Youpi!

My first time experiencing an episode release. Nice 😁

And it's a lovely one. Cayenne can be really mean sometimes, but I guess I can't argue with her results.

Also reminds me of the BitBC episode in which Strawberry confronts the guy everyone was scared of, and finds out that he has feelings and insecurities too. Pretty different story, but it came to my mind.

These are for one thing great tidings. But I do have a small, insignificant issue with the message. Because do you know who the supporters are, who are giving you the time to create this? It is us 108 people on Liberapay, who don’t pay you like 2€ per comic, but a weekly amount, not tied to any delivery of content. Who are paying you an average total of maye 90€ per week. For the time since the last release you should have gotten some around 10000€ from liberapay supporters. I myself (as your highest weekly public supporter on Liberapay) have been supporting you with 816€ (minus 5.95€ in bank fees) since the last chapter. And even the ones who don’t support you with 8€ a week, but maybe just 25¢/week have in this time supported you with some ~33€.

But we don’t get mentioned in the credits lists or anything (at least I don’t, cannot talk about the others). And that is fine. We are not doing this for acknowledgement. We are doing this because we want to support the idea. But it also feels a bit weird that even someone who gives you 1€ for over 2 years of work is mentioned by the name after the chapter, while those of us, who actually supported you for the time you needed, are not really mentioned anywhere. So while we are not doing it for acknowledgement — if you are already take the effort to acknowledge your Patreon supporters, why not also acknowledge **our** support while you’re at it?

@lazy Hey Tina, first, thank you. 💜 I can assure that making the credits took me 5h, and all the Liberapay supporters were written in the top level to reflect the amount of donation they sent me and my gratitude for that.

But I also respect privacy: the donation on Liberapay are by default set to 'private' afaik, and can be set to 'public'. I display only this ones. It's written on my page since the beginning. liberapay.com/davidrevoy/ So, please check your privacy settings on your account.

@lazy (ps: also let me know with what pseudonym you want to appear, because I can post-fix the Credits and write on it your contribution, it's flexible enough to edit it anytime).

link Tina   - Reply
lazy@fedi.at

Okay, as I said, I cannot speak for the others, but my donation is most certainly not in the list and is definitely **not** set to private. If anyone looks at your Liberapay profile my donation should display at the top of the list, as it has done for quite a significant while now:

web.archive.org/web/2024030511

So I did assume that liberapay donations don’t go into the list at all. If they do I stand corrected.

@lazy Thank you for confirming. It looks like we have a bug here at Liberapay level, because I kept the raw csv table they provided in my admin area, and for sure I couldn't find your id/name on it (and I get the name of "private", but I can't see the "secret" , the cells are empty, another privacy mode I forget to mention in my previous message). I exported a cvs from the period of 2023/04 to now; to be sure to also mention the supporters not active now, but who were during this period. 1/2

link David Revoy Author, - Reply
davidrevoy

@lazy 2/2 For sure, on the short term and in parallel of my investigations, I'll fix it and add your name on the credits, somewhere in the afternoon. A big thank you for your support, and for reporting the issue!

I currently don't see a problem on the Liberapay side: @lazy appears in all three CSV exports. Can you tell me which file you downloaded and when?

link David Revoy Author, - Reply
davidrevoy

@Changaco @lazy Hey! Thanks for looking at it, and yes, I also did the double check too, I still had the raw csv file of yesterday, and foudn the same result as you. I then concluded that I made a mistake while copying the table to my text file. Maybe a bad range selection on Libreoffice calc.
Mea culpa, my fault :) I tried to write it later on the discussion here (Edit: No, I forgot to write that publicly here, so now it is. It was in PM because revealed private info).
Thank you for Liberapay!

Ohh, the question whether I should wait until the #Esperanto translation is available or start contributing it myself.

Many thanks to you for making it open and to the translators for the learning tool

@rival 😻 Thank you! Even if I felt he had a very passive role in this episode, but I had to do that because the duo Pepper VS Cayenne is taking all the room. I'm working right now on rewriting my script of the future episode 40 to give him a little bit more influence on the events.

😃 Awesome to know! But just the way you draw him make it more than enough to me. ❤️ Carrot's participations are very subtle nevertheless extremely cute, like something done from the heart. Makes me want to pet him. 😻 Also, the witches names..., very spicy! 😉 🧹 Thanks a lot, David, have a great December! 🇦🇷 🤗 🇫🇷
