"Tears of Steel" full version  link on Youtube  many subtitles available, and 1080,720 HD res.

I'm happy to present you "Tears of Steel" , Blender Foundation's fourth short Open Movie.
I had a position of concept-artist and storyboarder in it. It was released yesterday. Time to reveal a bit more of my work on it, and post it here on my project for archive.

Concept-art & storyboard :

I worked on many concept rough, at an early stage of the pre-production. Time was really short ( less than 2 weeks to work on , counting storyboard in ). It was hard to provide at the end a full work to help the team , time was definitely missing to develop all the concept correctly.
But, the talented team get a lot of freedom to details and gives life to the concept , environment. They did directly in 3D a better job on the fly.  So, in the end, my participation is really humble on this project , but I had a lot of fun to share the building of the first stones so intensively working with Ian Hubert and Ton Roosendaal at the Blender institute.

Concept art with still a relation with the movie :

Concept art outdated with script changes :

Storyboard :

( quad split sample , full version soon )

The main cut on the storyboard was done by Ian himself using Mypaint. I came over all the frame and painted them to give an easier reading of it with Krita 2.4 . Color storyboarding gives an incredible feedback and is a good communication tool. Many concept problems could be figured within the 200 frames . For the short story ; the 200 frames were all painted in 3 days only  !  Some frames are visible here . Full storyboard will be published soon.

About Tears of Steel :

"Tears of Steel" was realized with crowd-funding by users of the open source 3D creation tool Blender. Target was to improve and test a complete open and free pipeline for visual effects in film - and to make a compelling sci-fi film in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The film itself, and all raw material used for making it, have been released under the Creatieve Commons 3.0 Attribution license. Visit thetearsofsteel.org website to find out more about this, or to purchase the 4-DVD box with a lot of extras.

Wonderful film, short as it was. Will you be working on the next Blender project?

@Brett W. McCoy : Hey Brett ; thanks for the comment. Normally It wasn't originaly planed I would work on Mango , but the original concept-artist selected abandoned the position at the last moment beginning the pre-production. As I was around IRC channel , and open movie , I was a 'rescue' artist smile It was also a lucky opportunity, but with the short time, my participation was really humble.

I don't think I will have the luck to make another open movie project. Maybe on the far future ; the fantasmatic project called 'fruitbasket' where all artist from the past open movie ( getting old ) gather for a movie jam smile
