Change Ahead! Moving from per-content to monthly support.
Hello,
TL;DR: My Patreon and Tipeee accounts are switching to a monthly subscription model starting January 2026. Adjust your donation, be kind with your wallet! (Check out the short comic above.)
A FAQ about the change:
Q: Why is this change happening? Was it forced?
A: Both Tipeee and Patreon have found that only 1% of their creators use the "per-creation" model. It seems they're streamlining their features to focus on more popular options. If I want to remain active on these platforms, I have no other choice.
Q: Why Patreon is still holding this change for other creators? and why is it happening for you in January 2026?
A: Patreon initially planned to switch to the new model in November 2025, but due to technical issues with a payment processor (Apple), they've postponed the deadline several times. Tipeee recently announced a January 2026 deadline, so I've decided to move both platforms to the new monthly subscription model at the same time.
Q: Have you changed the Tiers?
A: Yes, I've updated the tiers to a classic structure: $1, $3, $5, and $10 (and above). I've also added $50 and $150 tiers for companies that want to support my work. The same tiers are available on Tipeee, but in Euros. Since I don't have a paywall, tiers are mainly a way to give my supporters a larger font size in the credits at the end of new Pepper&Carrot episodes.
Q: Have you changed 'About/Description' on Patreon and Tipeee?
A: Yes, I wanted to update the page with better links, titles, etc... It was just a refresh.
Q: I see you have a lot of supporters on Patreon, Tipeee and Liberapay. Why should I join?
A: These numbers are still from before the adjustment using the 'per-content' model. On average, I have released a Pepper&Carrot comic three times a year over the last 10 years. The page will be updated soon (see the next question below for more information).
Q: The pages on Patreon and Tipeee still shows "per-content", is it normal?
A: Yes, the change will take effect on Patreon on 12 January, and on the first January for Tipeee. Until then, the page still shows 'per-content'. This is because I have decided to give one month's notice to allow my patrons to adjust their budgets. (Don't worry though: I won't release the 'per-content' mechanism during this period.)
Q:Tiers and Credits: How it works?
A: Since I don't have a paywall, tiers mainly offer a larger font size in credits at the end of new Pepper&Carrot episodes. Check the graph here to see how I organize the credits.
Q: Which platform is best for supporting you?
A: I recommend Liberapay. This is because it doesn't have the 5% fee that Patreon and Tipeee take. To fund Liberapay, you have to support them... on Liberapay.

Why were you forced though? Do I miss something? π€

I've always wanted to be a monthly donation patron for you.
βdavidrevoy
@halla
Thank you for your words and your support since the first episodes!
6 βAs you can imagine, this change affects me so much... That's why I'm releasing three comic pages to talk about it. π
lazy@fedi.at
@halla liberapay has been available for some time, just saying ...
ArneBab@rollenspiel.social
Youβre now switching to the model I had thought youβd be using already -- and never realized you were almost starving yourself because I didnβt check whether the 3β¬ per month I set aside in my budget for you were actually taken by Patreon.
(I expected that it was monthly, because how else should you have been able to afford putting in more and more work per episode?)
So expect no complaints from me but rather a big *thank you* for all the wonderful art you are creating!

@ArneBab I was just as baffled to recently find out my last payment happened years ago! David explained, but I'm also happy to pay monthly, at I thought I was already doing that :-)
WTL@mastodon.social
Right now the Patreon link only shows /webcomic options. They're just changing those to monthly?
davidrevoy
@WTL Good question π
The change will take effect on Patreon on 12 January. Until then, the page still shows 'per-content'.
This is because I have decided to give one month's notice to allow my patrons to adjust their budgets. (Don't worry though: I won't release the 'per-content' mechanism during this period.)
6 βNumerfolt@kirche.social
Which of the 'links takes the smallest fee? Or does it not matter?
βdavidrevoy
@Numerfolt Liberapay. This is because it doesn't have the 5% fee that Patreon and Tipeee take.
4 β(To fund Liberapay, you have to support them... on Liberapay.)
Numerfolt@kirche.social
Okay, I looked at their FAQ and basically there are the transaction fees that I pay? Like I send you 1β¬ per month and pay some cents so you can get the full β¬?
And I can donate to them too, which is nice.
davidrevoy
@Numerfolt Yes, this is exact. Thank you
3 βjrdepriest@infosec.exchange
@Numerfolt maybe I should just use liberapay instead like I do for my Fediverse instance.
Edit: I switched to Liberapay.

@jrdepriest @Numerfolt Thank you

+1 on liberapay

βfr3d@fosstodon.org
if you have to stop all freelance work, does that mean, that you have to stop working with Framasoft and PeerTube?π¬π±
davidrevoy
@fr3d Unfortunately, that's one of the side effect; I wrote them an email in October about it. I'm still around as a volunteer contributor now, but it is clearly not the same time budget. π
βhendric@astronomy.city
Thanks for all you do. Upped to $10. π
βdavidrevoy
@hendric π Thank you a lot!
βTywele@corteximplant.com
do you prefer monthly or yearly payments? And which site do you prefer to get paid on?
davidrevoy
@Tywele Monthly or yearly? It certainly will depend on how much you pay in fees when you transfer money. If your bank charges high fees, it may be better to transfer money in one lump sum. If the fees are small or zero, monthly payments are great.
My preferred platform is Liberapay because the creator and admin are on Mastodon and the platform doesn't take 5%.
Thank you π

Hi David! I heard your interview on #HPR and really appreciate your stance on licencing and using Open Source tooling. Moreover, once I found your content, I think it's excellent. I had planned to go and subscribe but hadn't done so, so this thread is a great reminder - thank you! Having read your FAQ on your webpage, I will use liberapay, so you get as much of the donation as possible. Best of luck with the developing adventure!

I signed up for the minimum for now: $1.00 a comic. I hope it's better than nothing. Your art is wonderful as are your stories and I appreciate your anti-genAI stance.
βroguewolf@mastodon.online
Just signed up to support you via Tipeee but it sounds like Liberapay would be better so I'll change over to that.
The copies I ordered of The Potion of Flight and The Art of Pepper & Carrot are both fantastic, by the way!!!
βdavidrevoy
@roguewolf π Thank you very much π π

I gladly stay

I'm so happy to hear you say it worked!
To me, the monthly support just feels better even if it didn't make a difference financially. Instead of paying in return for something (which is a transaction), it feels like more like supporting the ongoing work and life of a great artist that has given so much to free/libre culture.
GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai
Itβs so much of the money donated to you goes to the platform or to the platform. The app people donate through is installed on..
It would be nice to have a way where artists got the money without a digital bridge toll extracting their tribute
davidrevoy
@GhostOnTheHalfShell Yes, both Patreon and Tipeee takes 5%.
The solution you mention about a bridge without this fee exists: https://liberapay.com/davidrevoy/

you might want to change the denomination of your membership options on patreon. I see 5β¬/month in the overview of all my memberships, but when looking at your membership options it still shows as "xβ¬ / episode".
I really enjoy the short stories you post here. I hope(expect) you will beginn posting them on patreon too, once the switch to monthly is done?
davidrevoy
@pitwenkin Yes I saw it and I'm afraid I can't change it at the moment. Patreon will make the change on their side one month after I publicly announce it. It's all part of their policy for moving accounts around.
Just to let you know, I won't be posting the episode until the 12th of January. (the effective date for my first monthly) :)
I'll post something on Patreon to let my supporters know about it.
(edit: forgot to say, thank you
)
2 βVANTABlack2000@mastodon.gamedev.place
I am not in a position right now to financially support you, but I will try to spread the word about your work since I do enjoy your comics.
I hope you have the best of luck.
βdavidrevoy
@VANTABlack2000 Thank you very much
lazy@fedi.at
Imo per content model is dangerous anyway. It rewards churning out quantity rather than quality. It means that an artist might need to release unfinished stuff just for the sake of being able to pay their bills. And for the supporter it is unsafe because there is little control to how much you pay. If someone pays 5β¬ per creation, assuming 1 creation per month, and suddenly you turn in 1 creation per day or something this might be more than the person can or wants to afford.
So per month or something means stabilty for both artist and supporter, just extra effort is not awarded. Per creation creates pressure for the artist and exchanges uncertainty of delivery for uncertainty in when and how much you pay.
βdavidrevoy
@lazy I'll see, but I've never received anything monthly in my life (except the Liberapay weekly support, and thank you very much for being a part of it, but it was a minor part of income so far).
I'm a freelancer working 'per task' since I was 18. I only knew that: making the work, getting paid, and I'm 44 years old π ... I really hope this change will be a good thing!
gws@mastodon.cloud
I've heard your voice and in this context, I can't not imagine Pepper speaking the same way.
βdavidrevoy
@gws Ha ha, you mentioned something that made me struggle while drawing this announcement. At first, I drew a little guy with a two-day beard and a brown haircut, sitting at my desk in front of my monitors.
But I was worried it wouldn't be really iconic, so I decided to go with Pepper as my avatar. I was fine with it, as I often used her for various things, but maybe it's a bit awkward in the end. π
gws@mastodon.cloud
Until there are voice-acted episodes (zomg!) we haven't anything else to work with. Nowhere to go but up, and you're not bad to listen to anyway ; )
davidrevoy
@gws Voiced Pepper&Carrot episodes? It exists! Check https://morevnaproject.org/pepper-and-carrot/ π
βgws@mastodon.cloud
aaaand, mind=blown. I've seen that style of animation used to turn album art into music 'videos' for YT but this is *proper*.
