I've seen a bunch of artists do that same "paint everyone a dark blue" stage at the start of colouring and always meant to ask... why? is it a foreground / background separation thing?

@gsuberland obviously is the authority here but my understanding is that the first pass is a roughing-out, getting the basic shapes/composition right without fussing "too much"
I believe showing that first pass in blue when coming back for the final lines is skeuomorphism at work, the lingering influence of non-photo blue even when working digitally

@SnoopJ @gsuberland Hey Snoopj, yes for the blue sketch under the line-work; a non-photo blue skeumorphism (today I saw on my TL digital artist using red https://misskey.design/notes/aawbzrtix5jz8s19 )
But what Graham is referring is right before coloring I think; the way I silhouette character (mask their shape) to split foreground and background. I use blue (middle of the video) to paint the mask. From my test, it's easier with this blue channel to notice tiny holes, bad edges, etc.
