I worked on most of the 'backgrounds' with the same method and only FLOSS ; first I used Mypaint to sketch thumbnails to discuss about the art direction, and lay down ideas. Mypaint is really good for this, I simply still regret to can't trace easily square/box/rectangle easily (that's why I use this grid paper ), but infinite sheet plus layer and 'pick-context' are really time saving, I did for each screen 4 thumbnails each time, and all are on the same *.ora file. Text and numbering are added on the fly with Shutter ,
When done, I painted over a 'speedversion' to present to my director with Gimp-painter mainly, and when I got his approval, I could dive into details with Mypaint.Here under this sentence, you can see the 'winter' final one :
Following the same process, I did the other seasons.You can see them high-res during the game if you have good skill and complete the puzzles :)
In end, many of the background get a painting retouch to change the ambiance to night or other daylight. This was mainly done with Gimp-painter.
